You might be saving for a holiday or your wedding. Being broke (or just frugal) doesn’t necessarily mean that you have no options when it comes to entertaining weekends.

Splashing cash on the latest trendy restaurant or club might be fun but often these ventures into the outside world prove to be not only expensive but sometimes it’s just plain disappointing.

Here are a few ideas to make your hard-earned coin go further without sacrificing the fun:

1.Community events

The search for entertainment that will kill time, not your pocket, can often end much closer to home than anticipated.

Many community events are free to attend and you might even meet neighbors you actually like — while maintaining social distance, of course.

Flea markets, boot sales, monthly zumba in the park, local soup kitchen — get out there and have some free fun.

2. A trip to the local library

Libraries aren’t just for book worms who get lost in the smell of old books as they drift in and out of other worlds.

They often also house CD and DVD collections you could check out if you want to go oldschool.

Storytime events for young children, book clubs, and more are usually all free for anyone to attend, so get in there.

3. Follow a cooking tutorial or art class

Teach yourself something new and tasty by exploring some culinary secrets. This could be anything from a humble loaf of bread to dishes from foreign destinations.

Watching YouTube tutorials on how to paint or draw or create resin art can make you go from beginner all the way to expert level. It’s totally engrossing!

4. Learn a random skill

Online learning has grown substantially to the extent that a person could easily teach themselves a valuable skill in the comfort of their own home.

Learn how to change your oil or perfect a juggling act, the sky’s the limit. It’s also the perfect opportunity to learn a skill that could get you that promotion.

5. Give Geocaching a shot

Head outdoors for a treasure hunt that will see you chasing done ‘caches’ using GPS coordinates. There are tons of websites providing clues to the location of these hidden items.

Pick one that requires some hiking or luck out and discover loot just around the corner. It’s free and fun and you don’t even need company for it.

6. Pay it forward

Think outside of the box and give your community the gift of kindness by doing anything from cleaning up a local park or even starting a free book exchange.

7. Host a yard sale

Not only is clearing out your clutter therapeutic but it could earn you some much-needed cash.

Pull up a lawn chair and enjoy being paid to sort out that corner of the garage you’ve been avoiding for ages.

8. Plan your dream vacation

Beat your blues by planning out the itinerary for your ultimate getaway. Mapping out the trip and activities may just spark the inspiration to make that lifelong dream a reality.

It doesn’t have to cost money to make you happy. You just have to think outside the box. Have fun!
